Clinical Study of Topical Minoxidil Therapy in Alopecia

Abstract
Minoxidil is known as a potent antihypertensive agent which causes hypertrichosis virtually in all patients treated with it. We tried to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of 3% .minoxidil lotion on forth-five patients with male pattern alopecia or alopecia areata. Patients were treated with topical application of 3% minoxidil lotion twice a day for 6 months.
The effect was assessed by the appearance or increase in number of vellus hairs or terminal hairs on bald areas.
1. The effect of topical application of 3% minoxidil lotion in patients with male pattern alopecia: by week 24, we found the effect in 12 of 15 patients(8O%).
2. The effect of the topical application of 3% minoxidil lotion in patients with alopecia areata: by week 24, we found the effect in 13 of 16 patients (81.3%).
3. The degree of efficacy was related to the duration of the therapy.
4. The side effects observed in 45 patients with 3% minoxidil lotion were local pruritus in one(2.2%) and dizziness in another (2. 2%,).
From these results, it is suggested that topical minoxidil may be an effective and relatively safe therapeutic agent for male pattern baldness and alopecia areata.
